Fishing Little River and North Myrtle Beach

The north end of the Grand Strand has its own fishing port: Little River, on the Intracoastal Waterway a few miles from Little River Inlet. Fleets, charters, and tournament boats run from its waterfront and the marinas nearby, and Cherry Grove's pier and marsh are minutes away.

The port

Little River is one of the oldest towns on the Grand Strand and still a working waterfront. Charter boats, headboats, and shrimp boats tie up along the Intracoastal Waterway, and marinas line the waterway toward North Myrtle Beach. From the docks it is a short run down the waterway to Little River Inlet, a jettied inlet at the North Carolina line.

Little River ports hold several South Carolina records, according to SCDNR, including red snapper (37 lb 8 oz, 1964), red grouper (33 lb 13 oz, 2022), speckled hind (45 lb, 1973), and Atlantic bonito (7 lb 11 oz, 1993).

Boats from the north end

  • Headboats from Little River and North Myrtle Beach run half-day, full-day, and Gulf Stream bottom trips. Hurricane Fleet says it has operated for more than 75 years.
  • Charters fish inshore, nearshore for king mackerel and cobia, and offshore to the Gulf Stream; Little River Fishing Fleet lists Gulf Stream trips of 35 to 60-plus miles.
  • Tournaments: the fall Rumble in the Jungle King Mackerel Tournament fishes from Little River; see the 2026 results.

Fishing without a boat

  • Cherry Grove Pier for pier fish and king mackerel from the end.
  • The Cherry Grove marsh and Hog Inlet area behind North Myrtle Beach for flounder, red drum, and trout from shore and kayaks (check access and parking rules).
  • The waterway from public landings and parks, with a license.

Public landings

Horry County's Johnny Causey Landing (2111 Little River Neck Road) and T. Craig Campbell Landing (148 Morgan Avenue, Little River) put trailer boats on the waterway close to the inlet. See boat ramps and inlets.

The state line

North of Little River Inlet is North Carolina. Calabash, Sunset Beach, and Bird Island are NC waters with North Carolina rules and licenses. Charters crossing the line handle this for you; on your own boat, know where you are.

Common questions

Do I need a North Carolina license to fish Little River?

Not in South Carolina waters. The state line runs just north of Little River Inlet. If you fish north of the line, including Calabash Creek and Bird Island areas in North Carolina, you need a North Carolina coastal recreational fishing license.

What is the closest public boat ramp to Little River Inlet?

Horry County's Johnny Causey Landing on Little River Neck Road, North Myrtle Beach, is on the waterway near the inlet. T. Craig Campbell Landing is on the Little River waterfront.

Is Cherry Grove good for fishing?

Yes. Cherry Grove Pier is a popular pier for king mackerel and the usual pier fish, and the Cherry Grove marsh behind the beach holds flounder and red drum. South Carolina's state-record tiger shark came from Cherry Grove in 1964, per SCDNR.
